This constant cycle of weight loss and weight gain is difficult and frustrating and can leave us feeling helpless, unhappy and with very low self-esteem. I know because I have been in the exact same position you may be in.
We have a deep-rooted, emotional relationship with food and eating. A relationship which often likes to love and hate us and everything in between. Arguing with ourselves and the food on our plate is quite a common thing. Hating ourselves for eating that slice of carrot cake or berating ourselves for having seconds, is almost written on the faces of some of our fellow diners. This sometime volatile rapport has a massive impact on how, why and what we eat. As such, our weight is complex.
Quite like any relationship, it is often one we forget to pay attention to or forget to nourish. Bad eating habits can easily drift into our daily lives through the stresses, strains and upheavals of everyday life. We finish the sharing bag of crisps with no help, half a packet of digestives is gone in one sitting or the entire pizza is eaten without a second thought. Our habits become second nature. Food becomes a love/hate relationship and we jump out of the passenger seat, letting it take us down the wrong road. Weight has a habit of hiding the signs and suddenly, there we are, at the end of the road with more baggage than we started out with.
There are times we want to break up with this torn relationship with food but let’s face it, we need it to survive and perhaps the problem isn’t as big as we think. Until it is. Soon, we find ourselves stuck in a negative cycle and can’t break free. The significance of this relationship is huge when we start to question how we can lose a portion of weight and why we find it such a struggle. The problem is, we rarely look at the bigger picture or the underlying causes of weight or issues with food. We avoid the relationship.
And yet, weight loss is a much bigger and more complicated scenario than simply saying no to food.
We are sold a very modest idea about losing weight, which is simply not adequate. Move more. Eat less. It sounds simple enough but when it doesn’t work, we often blame ourselves and not the diet plan which sold us the idea. Research has quashed these ideas. It tells us, merely eating healthy and exercising is not enough to effectively lose weight and ultimately keep it off. Diet and weight loss programmes are often missing a vital component to take you past the starting point in this marathon. Remember, it’s rarely a sprint.
What they are forgetting is our mind. That big, internal thought processor which dictates most of our actions.

Let’s look at Jane, who has a very stressful job and works long hours and has to juggle a busy home life with a busy work life.
As a result, Jane’s emotional health may be suffering through heightened anxiety and stress. In addition, Jane does not have any time to engage in any exercise or focus on healthy eating. This leads to poor physical health. Mental health could be further affected by unhelpful thinking, such as “I have to get everything done today or I will lose my job”. As a result, the home and work environment will be out of balance.
As you can see, all 4 areas of the “WHOLE HEALTH MODEL” are connected and need to be looked at in order to give you a healthy lifestyle and make lasting changes.

The Problem with Dieting
How often have we heard the frustrating advice to eat less and move more as we take on the challenge of losing weight or improving a healthy lifestyle? A lot. And it’s certainly not as though we haven’t thought about this routine in the first place. Yes, it makes incredibly logical sense, but I think we can agree, it is not as easy as restricting our calories and hitting the gym.
When we start on a weight loss journey we are determined, focused and adamant that we will do it this time. But what makes this time any different to the last? Chances are we are using the same diet books, the same meal plans, and pinching the same skin on the same waistline as we look in the same mirror. We have all been here before. So, why is it such a challenge to maintain a healthy eating and exercise regime when everyone else seems to be able to do it? We follow the fitness gurus with their protein shakes on Instagram and wonder why the weight piled right back on to us after the last diet became dead in the water. Didn’t we follow exactly what they said? Or at least, almost.
The reason so many of us fluctuate with our weight or struggle to lose weight, is because diet programmes do not look deeper into the whys of our eating habits and weight gain. The plan may temporarily show positive results with the weight slowly creeping back on as we go back to our old ways. Maintaining a significant diet without understanding the root causes, without tempering the soured relationship with food and forgetting to rewire our minds, will see us falling back into old habits.
This programme uses a psychological and emotional approach in understanding our behaviour surrounding food. We balance our relationship with food and strengthen our mind to be in the driving seat. This is how we garner results.
Understanding the whys of the food relationship, counters the stigma that weight gain is a result of gluttony or a lack of willpower. It is much more intricate than some diets would have you believe. In fact, I know you have the willpower, you simply need to tone it up before you can firm up your body.
Weight loss, and more importantly, sustainable, long term weight loss, is a minefield of emotions, triggers, motivation and much needed support. It is not that we need to try harder or have more self-control, eat less or eat better. We are as resolute as we are ever going to be when facing such a significant task, however, that does not make working through weight loss or building a healthier lifestyle any easier. It is a process, a journey, and often, a long road. There is no quick solution to weight loss which is often the answer being sold by the latest in-fashion diets.
Our relationship with our bodies, the food we eat, and the reasons behind wanting to change our lifestyle are delicate. Much more delicate and questionable than would ever be addressed in a get thin quick self-help book, which is usually left to sit on the nightstand gathering dust. These books often come with unrealistic expectations which can send us spiralling backwards and stagnating the positive plans we had for losing weight.
If we browse our local bookshop or library, we will see shelves full of such books with this almost unattainable answer to losing those extra pounds – close your mouth and get on your feet. It seems like a straightforward and practical solution but what many of these weight loss theories forget is that the drive to lose weight often has a lifespan when it’s executed in such simplicity. The term fad diet didn’t come out of anywhere. These novelty diets are popular only for a brief time, they are not recognised as a standard dietary recommendation and often promise unreasonably fast weight loss with poor results. When we are sold promises of losing weight, of getting fitter and when they fail to materialise our confidence and self-esteem drop. We often give up, blaming ourselves and not the faulty diet plan.
Diet programmes may focus on what to eat more of and less of, focusing on portion size, fat content, protein and carbohydrates but this does not address the important issues surrounding our weight loss. They fail to recognise why we eat the way we do, why we eat certain foods and why food becomes a comfort, forgetting the relationship we want you to understand.
Diets often blame us for not seeing the diet through, but they do not give us the skills to maintain momentum or understand our eating habits. They give simplistic methods with short term results, are often calorie controlled and fail to look at external factors such hormonal changes, thought processes or even events in our daily lives which influence our eating habits.
The momentum and energy to maintain our focus on a diet is tough considering life has a habit of not always playing by the rules. In a perfect world, we would be devoid of any temptations, meals would be prepped and cooked for us with the right portions and quantities of veg and protein and a personal trainer would keep us on target to hit that 5k. If only!
We live in a world surrounded by obstacles. Invitations to dinner, out for drinks, and to our nieces christening all have temptations outside of our weight loss plan. A hard day at work, unexpected news, or a low mood has a way of throwing a spanner in the works. It’s easy to drop the ball and ultimately find our focus is limited or eventually broken. This is often when diet plans and exercise regimes stop. Putting the brakes on our weight loss has even further underlying issues which most diet plans don’t address. We look at understanding life and how we react to it with food.
